ABSTRACT

Travel novel is a novel based on the travel process, and its story structure is various and complex contrasting to a simple travel story. This study analyze story structure of two popular travel literatures by Jules Verne: 『Gulliver's Travels』by Jonathan Swift, and 『Around the World in Eighty Days』. It also propose a desired direction of travel novel genre based on the analysis. According to the study results, both travel novels show different social message implying different social atmosphere. The writing style of the novels is also contrasting. The writing style of 『Gulliver's Travels』is satirical, fantastic, and metaphorical as compared with that of 『Around the World in Eighty Days』as straightforward, realistic, and logical. The study suggests there is a common ground between the novels in that they have the same travel story structure that the main characters return to their home in the end after travelling strange areas. Some study implications are suggested.
