Positive identification of human body remains is one of the most important tasks in mass disaster management. In general, anthropometric studies of long bones help to take informations such as race, gender, age, and stature of an individual. The previous reports estimated the stature from the femur length or from its fragments. One hundred ninety five (male 120, female 75) human bodies were examined. We measured 11 items which related breadth and length of femur. The highest correlation coefficients showed in the distance from most proximal point of intercondylar fossa to midpoint of lesser trochanter (IFLM) and distance from most proximal point of intercondylar fossa to most proximal point of greater trochanter (IFGP). The regression formulae were obtained from the various measurement of the fragmentary femur. With known values, the expected maximum femoral length was as follows. When using IFLM, maximum femoral length (male) = 21.788±1.278*IFLM±9.714 maximum femoral length (female) = 33.892±1.224*IFLM±11.311 maximum femoral length (combined) = 10.201±1.310*IFLM±6.746 When using IFGP, maximum femoral length (male) = 1.162*IFGP-8.770±8.882 maximum femoral length (female) = 1.117*IFGP±7.265±13.604 maximum femoral length (combined) = 1.149*IFGP-3.860±5.827 Consequently, these formulae are useful to persume the maximal length of femur for the unidentified fragments of femur in Korean.

The pattern of location, perforator artery and skin territory of the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery are very important to the anterolateral thigh free flap surgery. The author studied the pattern of vascularization of the anterolateral thigh in 110 Korean cadavers using macroscopic dissection and radiographic methods. The location of the points in this study were expressed as XY coordination in reference to the line between ASIS and center of the lateral margin of the patella. The location of pedicle of the vastus lateralis muscle at XY coordination valued X: 20.8±6.0 cm, Y: -1.2±1.0 cm. The length and external diameter of the pedicle were 91.7±54.9 mm, and 2.7±0.8 mm respectively. The average number of perforator artery to the vastus lateralis muscle were 3.2±1.5. The skin territory of the perforator of the vastus lateralis muscle was 6×18 cm2, its location was 20.8 cm on the line AB. The pattern of distribution and territories of the anterolateral thigh obtained in this study will provide useful anatomical backgrounds for the flap surgery of anterior and anterolateral thigh.

A number of genetic and environmental factors influence athletic performance. Cardiovascular fitness is an important factor of athletic success, and ACE gene is a good candidate for regulating cardiac and vascular function. Because younger subjects have less chance of being exposed to environmental factors than older ones, genetic factors have a relatively greater influence on younger subjects. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of I/D polymorphism in the ACE gene between Korean young controls and athletes. By association study, there were no significant differences in genotype and allele distributions between two groups, respectively (P¤0.05). When stratified by sporting disciplines, the significant difference in distribution was not also detected in our study (P¤0.05). These results do not support the hypothesis that the I/D polymorphism in the ACE gene is associated with endurance performance in Korean young subjects.
