ABSTRACT

This article is a study of the Chinese tourist’s viewpoints and their travel experiences in Korea with the aim of examining the socio-cultural meaning of tourism. This study intends to deconstruct the “Hierarchy of meaning”found in existing tourism discourses and consider the tour experience from the perspective of the Chinese tourists. The analysis is based on a survey about Chinese tourists visiting Korea and the online posts of the Chinese online tour companies that reflect the viewpoints of the tourists. Through this study, we discovered that tourists’ experiences in Korea can be divided into “patriotic/developmental gaze,” “consumerism/cosmopolitan gaze,”and “interpretive/self-reflexive gaze.” “Patriotic/developmental gaze”focuses on the economic developments of the place of visit when forming an image of a society, and “consumerism/cosmopolitan gaze” appears when the tourists’ experiences are concentrated on a pursuit of certain lifestyle through participating in the consumer culture such as shopping.“Interpretive/self-reflexive gaze” is when the tourists look for the hidden histories and meanings of visited places and tries to explain or interpret the places using one’s own logical reasoning. This gaze sets importance on cultural experiences and accumulating memories of life history. This study has revealed the importance of meaning that the tourists give to their travels despite the prejudices that the host society may impose on them.
