ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the transformation and the process of change of the Japanese Korea Tour after the late 1980s that have come about as the result of Seoul’s transformation. This is done in terms of the Japanese tourists’ “Sense of Place.”The transformation of Seoul has come about by means of restructuring that involved multi-level changes from global to the local region. With this purpose, this study focuses on the growth process of the Gangnam area, which became a symbolic place of Korea’s rapid growth and urbanization. The focus will be on the transformation of spatial organization, place identity, and place image surrounding Gangnam which has led to qualitative changes of “consumption of place” in Seoul. This study suggests three dimensions of restructuring that has taken place in the city as follows: “reorganizing space,” “reconstructing of placeidentity,”and “reproducing place-image.” Also, this study aims to examine the qualitative changes of “consumption of place” in terms of Seoul’s spatial organization. This is done by examining the elements, together with historical transformation of Japanese Tourism, organization, understanding, desire and perspective surrounding modern Seoul.
