ABSTRACT

This paper interpreted the position of verbal head and directional complement from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. We argued that these syntactic phenomena are all the results of syntactic expression of conceptual structure, which is controlled by conceptual expression principle. Conceptual expression principle is an iconic principle: the more a conceptual element has a high value of cognitive prominence, the more it can get a prominent form to express it.
