AB - This paper initiates a study of the “Glocal” concept within the framework of cultural geographical thought, commencing in the 2025 research year. This research opportunity allowed the author to effectively connect the cultural geography of Confucian thought with the “Glocal” perspective. The primary objective is to present a practical model for the modern interpretation of the tradition of fieldwork-based philosophical practice in cultural geography.
Through an examination of Yulgok’s perspective on East Asian everyday life and ideals within a glocal context, the author explores methodologies for reinterpreting the philosophical and social values inherent in Confucian thought and culture from a contemporary viewpoint. This approach significantly strengthens academic exchange and cooperation. Furthermore, this study introduces a novel perspective for investigating Confucian culture through the lens of cultural geography. The local experiences and insights garnered have substantially contributed to shaping the direction of future research and practical activities.
The East Asian horizon of Yulgok studies is characterized by academic openness, inclusiveness, and the philosophical dialogue between Confucianism and Taoism. Yulgok’s emphasis on the timeliness of the everyday and the ideal serves as a practical means to achieve self-cultivation and the governance of others (修己治人), ultimately realizing the principle of “sagelinesswithin and kingliness without” (內聖外王). In this framework, ethical teachings are the objects of adherence, while laws and institutions are the targets of reform.
In summary, this constitutes a form of philosophical practice. While exploring the East Asian “Glocal” dimensions of Yulgok studies, the author identified a pressing need for enhanced communication and research collaboration that encompasses the broader “Glocal” sphere, centered around the Korean Peninsula. Consequently, there is an urgent necessity to cultivate a new generation of scholars equipped to advance Korean studies and Yulgok studies with a specific focus on this “Glocal” paradigm.
