AB - The Imjin Wa r brought extreme social disruption to Joseon, and the breakdown of information and communication networks posed a serious threat to the survival of individuals and families. Drawing on Oh Hee-mun’s Swaemirok, this study examines how the literati maintained social and familial communication during wartime and The analysis divides Oh Hee-mun’s wartime experience ac- cording to his places of residence—Jangsu, Hongju, Imcheon, and Pyeonggang—and investigates two forms of communication: social communication through the royal gazette (Jobo) and official documents (Gwanmun), and familial communication through personal letters. During the Jangsu and Pyeonggang periods, when Oh maintained close contact with local government offices, official documents served as his primary source of information. As wartime conditions gradually stabilized, however, personal letters became increasingly important for maintaining family ties. In Pyeonggang, where he lived near his eldest son’s workplace, access to official information and communication with family members became relatively stable. These shifts demonstrate how the literati adapted their communication strategies to changing circumstances.
By examining both official and private networks, this study highlights the role of communication in everyday survival during the Imjin Wa r . It further demonstrates how information circulated and family ties were sustained through wartime correspondence.
Comparative analysis of other literati diaries will help determine whether Oh Hee-mun’s “communicative ability” was individual or characteristic of the literati more broadly.
