AB - This article reads the 1970s fiction of Hwang Sok-yong, Cho Sun-jak, and Oh Jung-hee, together with the criticism written about it at the time, from the standpoint of the adjudicative form that criticism employed in determining the politics of a literary work. Criticism of the 1970s is customarily described through the opposition between Changjak kwa pipyŏng and Munhak kwa chisŏng, yet the common condition Kim Hyun set down prior to that opposition, in “The Method of Criticism,” was the definition of the critic’s task as decipherment. To take decipherment as one’s task is to take one of the three logics of democratic writing distinguished by Rancière—the democracy of mute things—as the definition of literature as such, and whatever that definition could not accommodate was attributed to the author rather than to the logic of the work. Kaekji had something to answer with on either of the two criteria of adjudication and so became exemplary, but the price it paid—the plurality of voices, the political event itself, and molecular intensity—found no entry in the vocabulary of contemporary criticism. In Cho Sun-jak’s two novels the path of decipherment that reads social truth out of things breaks off at every turn, and the unadjudicated remainder, transferred to the author’s “temperament,” turned an earlier approval into the ground for its withdrawal several years later. In Oh Jung-hee’s fiction, social signs are set out as equivalents among other signs, and the temperament and vision assigned to that position show the same attribution operating with the opposite sign. The 1970s roster of novelists did not reflect literary merit; it was a value produced by a single adjudicative form.
