AB - This study examines strategies for revitalizing three major regional theater festivals in Gyeongsangnam-do: the Geochang International Festival of Theatre, the Miryang Performing Arts Festival, and the Tongyeong Theatre Arts Festival. Although these festivals are important cultural assets, they currently face common challenges, including weakened artistic vision, declining creative capacity, limited inter-festival cooperation, and short-term event- oriented operations.
Each festival nevertheless possesses distinctive strengths. The Geochang International Festival of Theatre maintains its tradition of international and outdoor theater; the Miryang Performing Arts Festival retains performance infrastructure and the symbolic legacy of its former theater village; and the Tongyeong Theatre Arts Festival preserves the creativity and experimental character of a privately led broader performing arts ecosystem across Gyeongsangnam-do.
This study argues that revitalization should therefore focus noton simply maintaining or integrating the festivals, but on preserving their individual identities while expanding practical cooperation.
Such cooperation may include joint invitations, shared promotion, professional personnel exchanges, rotating performances, creative workshops, and shared evaluation data. Through these measures, regional theater festivals can become important platforms for strengthening cultural vitality and artistic self-sustainability, rather than functioning merely as supplementary cultural-policy instruments responding to regional decline.
