ABSTRACT

New textbooks for Korean History from eight different publishers have been released to the first year students of high school as of March 2014. The new textbooks were technically re-written in conformity with the Proclamation of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Annex 7 (Social Studies Curriculum) #2009-41 (Feb. 26, 2008) and have been authorized by the National Institute of Korean History in 2013 who has been delegated of pertinent authority by the Ministry of Education. This article is an outcome of a project to analyze how the new school curriculum has been implemented in the new Korean History textbooks and, as a result, how it affected the narrative of the textbooks mainly in the sections of the diplomatic relations, the economic affairs, and the socio-cultural domain of history of the Koryo dynasty. Even though several mistakes and minor errors survived through the former revisions accompanied by the revisions of the school curriculum, it is certain that the new textbooks generally proved many positive potentials of the textbook authorization system in several areas: diverse learner-centered learning materials, various approaches to different historical interpretations, high-quality visual materials, and user/ reader-oriented editing techniques. In addition, in order to make this analysis useful also in the area of the study of teaching, the authors introduced better examples of presentation among the eight textbooks; in some cases, rough directions of supplementation were also suggested.
