ABSTRACT

This article aims to investigate patterns of interaction among elementary school English learners which occur during pair work. Ten pairs of learners with different language proficiency were formed. Data were collected on the basis of pair work and interaction. From interaction data, which was transcribed, learners’ utterance features were analyzed with the use of grounded theory. This generated 11 subcategories. The subcategories were then integrated into categories of the ensuing three: Assistance request, assistance supply, and no assistance. Built on mutuality and equality, the three categories were organized into five patterns of interaction: Initiate receptive, cooperate cooperate, dominant-passive, passive passive, and dominant dominant.
