ABSTRACT

This study is to allow the mothers of infants with hearing impairments to acquire communication skills so that they can carry out efficient communications with their children, and to find out how their communication skills can be improved when intervention programs are adopted in their homes. To meet the purpose of this study, structured home based intervention programs which support parents to help their infants with hearing impairments improve their communication skills and also supports parents to communicate with their infants through various activities in the context of natural activities of daily living were designed and adopted. In order to examine the effects of home based intervention programs, the multiple-probe design across subjects was used for three mothers.Analyses of the data indicated that three mothers acquired various communication skills through parents support and their communications skills in the interactions with their children was improved. The result was generalized in the different setting where intervention was not employed, and maintenance still continued after four weeks after the conclusion of the intervention phase.
