Although the SAP(Swedish Social Democratic Party) won the 2014 general election after its defeat in 2002 and 2006, its polling rate rose only by 0.4%. It has been pointed out that SAP’s working class base kept being eroded along with the falling unionization rate and the worsening SAP-LO relationship. It is the aim of this study to conduct an in-depth analysis so as to examine and explain the change in the rate of votes earned by the SAP and the Red-Green alliance. This study was able to verify at least four points by analyzing the exit poll data of recent general elections. First, the support rate of the SAP and the Red-Green alliance is the highest in the working class among all the class locations, which confirms that the class voting trend persists and the working class still forms the solid class base for the SAP, while the trend keeps weakening. Second, the weakening class voting trend exacerbates the issue voting phenomenon which is conducted with the two pillars of social issues and economic issues, while the Swedes prioritize social issues rather than economic issues. As the two major political parties such as the SAP and the Conservative party converge on major policy areas including social issues among others, economic issues tend to gain more and more importance in general elections. Third, the issue owner party changed from the SAP to the Conservative party in economic issues, while the SAP still holds the issue ownership in social issues. The change of issue owner party in economic issues owes to the fact that the Swedes by and large evaluate positively the role of the right-wing government dealing with the shock of worldwide financial crisis. It confirms that economic issues can change the issue owner party more frequently than other issues. Fourth, the two most important issues of the 2014 general election were unemployment and education. Given that the ever high rate of unemployment and the recent release of poor PISA scores made an absolutely favorable condition for the SAP in the 2014 general election, the meager rise of SAP’s polling rate does not allow any optimism on the part of the SAP in future general elections.

The Wallenberg family, the biggest capitalist family in Sweden has controlled many companies in industrial and financial sectors for five generations. And it has had controlling power much stronger than its stock portion. In a sense, it seems that the family has maintained the ownership relations and corporate governance similar to those of the Korean Chaebols. Paying attention to this, some Korean researchers and Korean mass media used the case of the Wallenberg family for maintaining that the Korean society should respect the Chaebol system and support the succession of management right of Chaebol companies to third generation of Chaebol families. But there are not only similarities but also differences between the Wallenberg family and the Korean Chaebol families. What made possible for the Wallenberg family to have controlling power much stronger than its stock portion were the dual class shares and the pyramid-like ownership relations. The latter means that the public utility foundations established by the family members own the investment company, Investor AB, and Investor AB in turn as a holding company owns many companies. Moreover, the excellent management capability and practice of noblesse oblige of the family, and the bank-centered Swedish financial system were also important factors. And the Wallenberg family has exercised controlling power under the conditions quite different from those of the Korean Chaebols, high level independence of the family companies, transparence of management, workers’ participation in management for example. And there were political conditions including the hegemony of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and the existence of very strong trade unions, which made it possible to check the possibility of misuse of the power of big capitalist families. Thus, it seems more desirable that the case of the Wallenberg family be ‘consumed’ in Korea for understanding what kind of conditions should be satisfied for allowing the Chaebol families to exercise controlling power much stronger than their stock portions, rather than for arguing for protecting the management right of Chaebol families and supporting the succession of management right to third generation of Chaebol families.

Child Abuse and State Intervention: The Danish Case Tøndersagen

Denmark is commonly known as a welfare state, offering universal benefits to all people living and working within the country. Luckily, most children in Denmark are doing well, but for those who are exposed to abuse, improved knowledge and understanding is essential to provide the best possible services. Therefore, following the critical results from the 2003 UNICEF report, one may wonder how Denmark responded to this discouraging state of child maltreatment. The purpose of this article is to analyze the development of child welfare policies since 2003 in Denmark. To accomplish this, I will discuss the concepts of child abuse, intervention and welfare in general, and key studies from Denmark after the 2003 UNICEF report, in particular. Furthermore, I will use the child abuse case known to locals as Tøndersagen (TheTøndercase), which was discovered in 2005 to illustrate the state’s responsibility to intervene in high-risk families. The framework for child welfare can be characterized as either a child protective orientation or a family welfare orientation in regards to the child abuse reporting system. These two systems differ along four dimensions: 1) Framing child abuse, 2) Operating the response, 3) The function of child welfare professionals and 4) Parents agreement to out-of-homeplacements. Child abuse was medically “discovered” in 1962 when Kempe and his colleagues coined the term the battered child syndrome to describe “a clinical condition in young children who have received serious physical abuse, generally from a parent or a foster parent”. Tøndersagen is an example of the State’s failure to intervene, and the eldest daughter’s successful legal action against the local authorities has proven an important historical change in attitudes towards local authority’s responsibilities towards at-risk and abused children. At a time, when privatization and marketization has become a dominating trend, the compensation is a reminder that quality must be a primary priority when delivering social welfare services.

A Study of Space Utilization through Astrid Lindgren Exhibition

This paper is to study how the image of Sweden and that of the author was explored through the exhibition of one of the world’s most famous Swedish children book author, Astrid Lindgren. The aim of this study is to find out the realistic issues and to suggest the solutions of the exhibitions for the children by studying the actual exhibition and its course of development that was opened on March 23, 2015 at the National Library of the Children and the Youth on the visit of Crown Princess of Sweden, Victoria, hosted by National Library of the Children and the Youth and the Swedish Embassy in Seoul, Korea. When it comes to discourse of image is more than just visual experience for the human-beings living in the 21st century. The meaning of emotional experience acquired in a space has more substantial translation of the selves and the special environment is essential in the recognition of the best value for the existence of a human being. In this sense, the special values can lead to a more meaningful life and add more value on the meaning of time. The emotional interactions are pivotal in the library exhibitions. Especially the exhibitions for children might have a big influence to the audience, the children. It is quite obvious that what they see and feel has direct and indirect influence their development. For this reason, the exhibition designer seeks to explore the opportunities for diverse translations beyond the intention to deliver and diffuse information. This study analyses how Lindgren’s world has been realized through the course of conceptualization of Sweden where the author came from and finally how a facilitated communication was sought with the audiences. Moreover, the introduction of Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, established by the Swedish government to commemorate and to celebrate the author’s contributions to raise interests on the children literature, who passed away in 2003, then 94 years old is also dealt in the paper.
