ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the mediating role of interpreters in political and diplomatic settings. For this purpose, videos, where both original speeches and their consecutive translations either in Korean or in Spanish were recorded, were collected and analyzed. The analysis reveals that interpreters resort to various strategies such as explicitation, reinforcement, high degree of formality, neutrality, and polishing, which demonstrate clearly that interpreters mediate the communication and try to fully deliver a speaker’s message in the target language. The study concludes that the interpreters’ mediation in political and diplomatic discourse is evident and important as it can affect international relations and the speaker’s reputation as a high-level officer.
