AB - This study aims to explore ‘the translation of narrative’ in the film adaptation of How to Steal a Dog. The researcher uses a 3-step analysis to delve deeply into factors surrounding adaptation. First, text analysis is conducted to analyze how the narrative of the novel is different from the adapted one. For this purpose, Greimas’s model of ‘schéma narratif’ is adopted. Secondly, the production of the target text is identified based on paratexts including the marketing concept, the positioning map and character introductions. Finally, socio-cultural factors that can potentially affect the production of the film are explored. Findings show three implications as follows: (1) film adaptation transformed the source text as a growth novel into a family movie; (2) marketability and acceptability were taken into consideration in the process of adaptation; (3) this decision making surrounding film adaptation can be affected by socio-cultural factors such as ‘familism’ and ‘we-ness.’
