AB - This study examines the competencies necessary to maximize the strengths of human interpreters in the age of AI, using YouTube comments on Sharon Choi’s widely acclaimed interpreting performances as the primary data source. Drawing on YouTube comments from eight interpreting videos with over one million views each, the study analyzed 3,762 comments directly related to interpreting from an initial dataset of 7,627. The study employed text mining techniques—namely, keyword frequency analysis, co-occurrence analysis, semantic network centrality analysis, and topic modeling (LDA)—to extract the key terms and themes related to interpreting. A qualitative analysis was then conducted to contextualize and interpret the findings. The study concludes by highlighting three core competencies for maximizing human interpreters’ strengths in the AI era: interpretive language competence, comprehension ability, and communication competence (linguistic, non-linguistic, and interpersonal).
