ABSTRACT

This study examines Kim Myŏng-sun as a pioneering female translator in colonial Korea by analyzing the distinctive features of her poetry translation. Previous scholarship has discussed her translations mainly in relation to their source texts, leaving her translatorial stance relatively underexplored. To address this gap, the present study compares Kim Myŏng-sun’s 1922 translation of Rémy de Gourmont’s “La Neige” with Kim Ŏk’s earlier version in Onoeui mudo (1921). The comparison reveals that Kim Myŏng-sun sought to render the poem’s meaning faithfully, correcting semantic shifts introduced in Kim Ŏk’s version. While Kim Ŏk preserved the original’s stanza structure, Kim Myŏng-sun reorganized it to foreground the poem’s parallelism and repetition. In terms of rhythm, Kim Ŏk used spacing between words to create musicality, but Kim Myŏng-sun avoided such spacing and instead focused on syllable count and rhythmic units. Moreover, she creatively rewrote certain expressions, adding her own poetic sensibility. These findings shed light on Kim Myŏng-sun as a translator who sought to faithfully convey the original poem’s meaning while reshaping poetic form, refining rhythm, and creatively rewriting the text.
