ABSTRACT

This study examines how Korean news media frame translation and interpreting (T&I) in the age of AI, using a corpus of 481 news articles collected via BigKinds over one year (July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026). Combining keyword frequency analysis, LDA topic modeling (K=5), valence frame coding, and semantic network analysis, the study identifies both the thematic content and the positive, negative, or neutral valence of media discourse. Results show that Korean coverage is overwhelmingly organized around technology- and industry-solution frames, with positive framing predominating overall. By contrast, discourse addressing interpreters’ and translators’ professional roles and identities was comparatively marginal, yet concentrates most of the negative coverage found in the corpus—revealing an asymmetric structure in which technology and services are represented positively while negative framing is displaced onto human professionals. Coverage also emphasizes AI translation as a tool for resolving language barriers faced by migrant workers and foreign residents, foregrounded "real-time" processing, and referenced translation nearly three times more often than interpreting. These findings suggest that Korean media construct AI-era T&I primarily through economic and industrial-efficiency frames, with implications for public perceptions of T&I professionals and the social value of T&I education.
