ABSTRACT

This study examines how literary translation was represented in the Korean media following Han Kang’s 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. It analyzes Korean news coverage from the announcement of the award through April 2026, dividing the material into three periods: the day after the announcement, the first month after the award, and the subsequent period through April 2026. The analysis traces how the focus of translation discourse changed across these periods. The findings show that immediately after the award, media coverage focused mainly on individual translators and their contribution to Han Kang’s international success. In the following month, attention shifted toward translation support systems, including government funding, translation institutions, and translator training. Later coverage increasingly discussed translation as part of the broader infrastructure needed for the international circulation of Korean literature. The Nobel Prize was also often presented as evidence of the success of Korea’s long-term translation support policies and as grounds for maintaining such support. By examining these shifts over time, this study contributes to a better understanding of how media discourse on literary translation evolves in response to a major international literary event.
