ABSTRACT

This study compares the titles and front covers of the original Taiwanese Mandarin edition of Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ with those of its Korean, English, and Japanese translations. Drawing on Batchelor’s account of translation paratexts and Risterucci-Roudnicky’s framework for title analysis, it examines title shifts, patterns of semantic foregrounding, and the visual organization of figures, space, salient objects, color, and textual hierarchy. The original edition constructs a form of fictional authorship by placing a fictional Japanese author alongside the actual author on the cover, while its colophon names Yang alone. All three translations extend this colophon attribution to the cover. Beyond this shared departure, the three translated editions foreground different narrative layers. The English edition preserves the semantic elements of the source title with the least modification and centers a bowl within a framed window, emphasizing travel and food. The Japanese edition restructures the main title around “railway” and “the two,” reintroduces the travelogue meaning in the subtitle, and foregrounds the two women’s relationship. The Korean edition adds 1938 and separates the figures through scale, space, and dress, foregrounding the work’s colonial historical context and the figures’ different social positions. Each edition thus proposes a distinct “reading contract,” with differences that may be read in relation to publishing and historical contexts.
