ABSTRACT

Jia Zhangke's film is considered a milestone between yesterday and today in Chinese cinema, as “since the beginning of China's cinematic history, there has never been a film that has expressed the breath of living Chinese people so authentically.” Michael Berry calls Jia Zhangke “not just a filmmaker but also a public intellectual, a real thinker.” Jia Zhangke's films are often discussed in the category of neorealism, which captured reality as it is, without embellishment, and showed social problems in everyday life. However, recent studies have argued for poetic realism, emphasizing that we shouldn't construct an ‘imaginary China’ based on the representation of ‘China’ in Jia Zhangke's films, and that we shouldn't construct an ‘imaginary China’ like Orientalism. Furthermore, research utilizing the concept of ‘景觀’(Spectacle/landscape) emphasizes that Jia Zhangke's works are not mere records of actual and objective reality, but constructions of the artist's subjective imagination of reality. Utilizing the concept of soundscape, the study argues that Jia Zhangke's use of loud noises, localized dialects, and timeless popular songs demonstrates his exploration of psychological space as well as the representation of physical space. This paper examines the methodological validity of this trend.
