Purpose:This study aimed to investigate the effects of non-pharmacological interventions in esophageal cancer surgery patients via a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: This study was conducted in April 2020 to update the original review. A systematic literature review was conducted based on the PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, NDSL, RISS, KISS, and KMbase databases. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 3.0) software was used to analyze the standard effect size, subgroup variables, and publication bias. Results: In total, 10 of 17 studies were used to estimate the effect size of non-pharmacological interventions such as education, exercise, management (temperature control, pain control, etc.), and nutritional support. These non-pharmacological interventions were effective in improving the quality of life (g, 0.15; 95% confidence interval, 0.10~0.21). However, pneumonia and lung function remained unaffected. The subgroup analysis according to the intervention type showed that education was effective in improving the quality of life, and interventions comprising education, management, and nutritional support were effective in reducing the incidence of pneumonia. Conclusion: In order to improve the quality of life and to prevent pneumonia in esophageal cancer surgery patients, non-pharmaceutical interventions comprising education, exercise, management, and nutritional support should be developed and provided.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of global health competency education on cultural competence, empathy, and cultural acceptance among nursing students in Korea. Methods: A literature review was performed until July 2021 in domestic electronic databases, including KoreaMed, RISS, KISS, and Google Scholar. Nine references that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and Meta-analysis was performed using Cochrane’s risk of bias tool and the R version 3.5.2 (Meta-analysis with R) program. Results: The findings in this study indicate that effect size of global health competency education for cultural competence was Hedges'g=1.33 (95% confidence interval, 0.78~1.89) and the effect size of empathy was Hedges'g=0.82 (95% confidence interval, 0.07~1.57), as indicated by a large effect size. The effect size of cultural acceptance was Hedges'g=0.49 (95% confidence interval, 0.06~0.92), as indicated by a moderate effect size. The differences were statistically significant. In the meta-subgroup analyzed by approach intervention type, intervention time had a significant effect. The risk of publication bias is low. This study found that the global health competency education program for nursing students had an effect on cultural competence, empathy, and cultural acceptance. Conclusion: Various global health competency programs should be developed and implemented for nursing students to improve their multicultural health competencies.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the predictors of late school-age children’s health behaviors in children and their mothers’ health beliefs, children’s self-esteem, and social support. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted with 152 late school-age children from the 4th to 6th grades and their mothers in Korea. Data were collected from February 19 to March 5, 2020. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple linear regression. Results: The average score for health behaviors was 3.35 out of 4.00. The highest subscale of health behavior was mental health, whereas the lowest was eating habits. After adjusting for the influences of the general characteristics of children and their mothers, children’s perceived benefits (β=.17, p=.005), perceived barriers (β=-.20, p=.001), self-efficacy (β=.19, p=.005), and mothers’ perceived severity (β=.18, p=.001) were significant predictors of health behaviors among late school-age children, accounting for 24.0% of the variance (R2 change=.24, F=11.59, p<.001). The total explanatory power of the final regression model was 72.0% (adjusted R2 =.72, F=24.98, p<.001). Conclusion: Children’s health beliefs were more important than mothers’ health beliefs in explaining the health behaviors of late school-age children. Nursing interventions should focus on perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and perceived benefits to improve health behaviors of late school-age children.
