The maxillary sinus is an anthropological landmark because of difference of volume of maxillary sinus among persons of different ethnic origin. This study was undertaken to provide morphological characteristics of Korean’s maxillary sinus. The size and volume of maxillary sinus were measured in 44 Korean skulls 23 males and 21 females from cadaver. The shapes of the maxillary sinus were classified according to Anagnostopoulou et al. (1991) and the sizes of the medial antral wall area of the maxillary sinus were classified according to Fernandes (2004b). The mean volume of maxillary sinus was 12.83±5.41 cm3, which was significantly different between males and females. Bilateral symmetry of the volume of the maxillary sinus was observed in the 70% of the specimens. The width of maxillary sinus was 26.59±4.96 mm. The height of maxillary sinus was 26.65±6.16 mm. The anteroposterior length was 32.84±4.96 mm. The anteroposterior length measured on C-Arm radiography was 36.99±4.72 mm. The shape of maxillary sinus was semi-ellipsoid and the majority (50%) of the shape of medial antral wall area of maxillary sinus was the type of small. The results of this study could be useful to clarify the anthropological characteristics of the maxillary sinus in Korean, and to provide an index of ethnic classification for the medial antral wall area.

The keystone area of nose is a clinically important structure for maintaining the stability of dorsum of nose. However, anthropometric data for individual structure constituting the keystone area were less studied. Dissections of external nose were performed in 12 cadavers for measuring the length and width of structural components of keystone area. Shape of nasal bones and the overlap area between upper lateral cartilage and nasal bone were classified. Measurements of the keystone area were also performed in 380 MRI and PACS images. Types of the caudal margin of nasal bone were classified as follows; type A: flat margin, type B: M shape, type C: extended midline, type D: retracted midline. Types of overlapped portion between upper lateral cartilage and nasal bone were categorized as follows; type Ao: flat midline, type Bo: short elongated midline, type Co: long elongated midline. Overlap length of upper lateral cartilage with nasal bone was 4~9 mm (mean 6.5 mm)in the midline, 0~4.5 mm (mean 2.7 mm)in the paramedian area of nasal bone. Overlapped width of upper lateral cartilage with nasal bone was 8~14 mm(mean 9.7 mm). Individual component of the keystone area has various shape and overlapped length. Therefore, cautious preoperative and intraoperative evaluation of each component is necessary for a safe nasal surgery.

The ubiquitin-proteasome system is crucial in maintaining cellular growth and metabolism. Dysfunction of this system may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. But its effects on primary neurons are largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effects of proteasome inhibitor and hypoxia on primary neuronal cultures to determine whether proteasomal malfunction induces neuronal death. Neuronal apoptosis increased in primary cultured cortical neurons with treatment of proteasomal inhibitor in normoxic condition and in the presence or absence of proteasomal inhibitor in hypoxic condition. Also expression of PARP and activated caspase 3 increased. NF-κB, a key transcription factor in this system expression increased in hypoxic condition and proteasomal inhibition. Interestingly, hypoxic condition induced an expression and accumulation of α-synuclein in neuron, one of components of Lewy body in Parkinson’s disease. Our findings determine that hypoxic condition may affect the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Furthermore, it suggests that hypoxic condition and proteasomal inhibitors are involved, at least in parts, in neurodegeneration of mouse model for Parkinson’s disease.
