Suggestions for the Future of the Korean Association of Physical Anthropologists ahead of Its 70th Anniversary

This study aims to summarize the status of member management, academic conferences, and journals over the past three years (2022~2024) to understand the overall situation of the Korean Association of Physical Anthropologists, analyze the factors that need to be improved for its development, and propose practical solutions. Over the past three years, the number of members and conference registrants of the Korean Association of Physical Anthropologists has not significantly increased. Additionally, the number of presentations at academic conferences was not substantial. The number of papers published in the journal ‘Anatomy & Biological Anthropology’ did not increase, and the research fields of them remained restricted. A survey on the association’s name revealed that a majority of respondents believed a name change was necessary, with a preference for renaming it to ‘Society for Anatomy and Biological Anthropology’, aligning it with the journal’s title. The author proposes several recommendations for the sustainable development of the association. First, after verifying the participation decision of all members, membership tiers and benefits should be assigned to enhance members’ sense of belonging and pride. Second, the association’s website should be effectively utilized by reinforcing its role as a communication platform. Third, to revitalize academic conferences and journals, external activities and scholastic exchanges should be strengthened and actively promoted. Fourth, changing the association’s name could help clearly define its identity and protect the rights and interests of its members. For the long-term development of the association, active participation and input from its members are essential. Additionally, the executive committee must carefully consider and respect the valuable opinions of members to ensure the society is properly positioned for the future.

Development of a Sacrum-Based Stature Estimation Model for Koreans Using 3D Reconstruction of Postmortem CT Images

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between sacral measurements and sex and stature by reconstructing postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) data in 3D, thereby proposing a regression model that can predict stature. This study has the potential to be applied in various fields, such as forensic medicine and morphology. This study utilized PMCT images from a total of 67 subjects (34 males, 33 females) derived from the Korean population, taken at the National Forensic Service between January and December 2022. The 2D PMCT images were reconstructed into 3D images using the Mimics program, and the measurement of sacral morphology was also performed using this program. We established four bony landmarks on the sacrum and measured the distance connecting each landmark: SW (Sacral width), SL(Sacral length), LOL(Left oblique length), and ROL (Right oblique length). The SW/SL/LOL/ROL ratio was calculated by dividing these measurements by the cadaver’s stature to explore their proportional relationship. The average stature was 1695.29±73.12 mm in males, 1599.24±61.18 mm in females, and 1647.98±82.64 mm in all subjects. The mean (Standard deviation) of the measurement variables was 95.84±5.13 mm for SW, 110.55±9.60 mm for SL, 93.73±6.56 mm for LOL, and 92.74±6.80 mm for ROL. The ratio of the measurement variables to stature was as follows: the mean SW ratio was 0.58±0.03, the SL ratio was 0.67±0.05, the LOL ratio was 0.56±0.04, and the ROL ratio was 0.56±0.04. The stature, LOL, and ROL were significantly longer in males than females(p=0.009, p=0.027). The model to estimate stature (y, mm) based on sacral measurement variables(x, mm) was derived with the following results: S =1109.468+5.619SW (p=0.004), S=1238.762+3.701SL (p<0.001), S=1107.396+5.767LOL (p<0.001), and S=1137.014+5.510ROL (p<0.001). We proposed a sacrum-based regression model for estimating stature, considering sex differences and measurement variables like SW, SL, LOL, and ROL. This model is expected to be useful in forensic anthropology and related fields.

The Impact of Medical School Enrollment Expansion on Anatomy Practical Education: An Analysis of Educational Effects and Learning Outcomes

Anatomy practicals play a crucial role in shaping the humanistic qualities and ethical responsibility of medical professionals, while simultaneously educating students in basic medical knowledge and medical humanities. However, current anatomy practicals face several structural challenges, including difficulties in cadaver procurement, a shortage of faculty and support staff, and inadequate practical environments. These issues are at risk of becoming more severe with the expansion of medical school enrollments. This study aimed to analyze the learning outcomes and educational effects of anatomy practicals through a 5-point scale, and to evaluate the impact of expanded medical school enrollment on anatomy practical education. First, the results showed that the highest response rates for learning outcomes achieved through anatomy practicals were in professionalism (29.2%) and problem-solving and research (25.7%), followed by clinical performance (14.2%) and communication skills (12.8%). Second, the educational effects of anatomy practicals were positively evaluated in several areas, including anatomical knowledge acquisition, attitude towards respect for life, teamwork, and creativity. Specifically, respect for life scored the highest with an average of 4.80. In contrast, empathy ability received a relatively lower score of 3.98. Third, students’ perceptions of the impact of expanded medical school enrollments on anatomy practical education were largely negative. Most students expressed concern that the quality of education in anatomical knowledge acquisition would deteriorate, with similar concerns raised regarding other aspects such as respect for life, communication skills, and teamwork. These findings suggest that excessive expansion of enrollments may degrade the quality of medical education, including anatomy practicals. This study highlights the importance of maintaining adequate infrastructure and educational environments to sustain the quality of medical education. Future research should include more comprehensive analysis across various regions and target groups.
