ABSTRACT

This paper sheds a light on the unit of translation which is referred to as a textual segment to be translated from the source text to the target text. There seems to be no unanimous agreement amongst scholars as to the scope and nature of such entities. But, in a traditional sense, the unit has been taken to mean individual words. However, this paper casts a serious doubt on the notion of units of translation on the grounds of individual words. Instead, the current paper illuminates the idea of chunks suggested by collocationists working in corpus linguistics. For this purpose, the paper examines two different notions of text in the first instance, namely Halliday's text and Sinclair's text, and stipulates what the text should be like. In so doing the present paper makes an attempt to argue that the co-text should be regarded as surroundings where chunks can be identified, and to substantiate that chunks can be a possible unit of translation in parallel to textual segments.
