ABSTRACT

This study is to suggest a basis for preparing foreign language translation guidelines by investigating how Korean culture-bound terms were translated into Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Thai. To this end, translated culture-bound terms of the Korean clothing, food, and housing were extracted from the Jeju Tourism Organization website, and the translation strategies, consistency, and compliance with official orthography were analyzed. The results showed that diverse translation strategies and types were applied to different languages but were inconsistent within each language, and the official orthography was not strictly complied with either. Therefore, a review or proofreading of the site is required, and official foreign language translation guidelines for these languages should be established for accurate and consistent reference. Follow-up studies are suggested such as a survey on the acceptability of native speakers.
