ABSTRACT

The present article is a condensed transcript of a discussion about the history, current state, and future prospects of translation studies in South Korea. In light of the ongoing transformation in this field, the discussion begins by assessing the growth of translation studies as an academic discipline. It raises concerns about ‘fragmentation’, where researchers tend to communicate only with those who share their specific interests. Hence, efforts are necessary to establish a shared set of academic values that can further bind scholars in the field. The discussion also delves into the evolution of T&I education in Korea and how recent developments have reshaped the classroom. The panel makes a number of recommendations for the further development of translation studies. For instance, there is a need to create a comprehensive map of Korea’s translation studies landscape. Also, scholars in translation studies should actively engage with the general public and promote the value of translation. Furthermore, translation studies researchers should broaden their horizons by delving into in-depth readings and discussions on topics traditionally associated with other academic disciplines. T&I education should also expand to allow students to explore various aspects of the language industry. The article concludes with suggestions for the next generation of scholars.
