AB - Peritext refers to the elements surrounding a book that greet the readers as the first threshold to the work and invite them to engage with it. In both original and translated works, peritext is largely shaped by publishers, who reconstruct and redesign these elements to ensure effective distribution and favorable reception in the target culture’s publishing field. In this sense, peritext represents a textual space subject to extensive editorial mediation. This study explores how publishers’ voices are reflected in the peritext of translated books, focusing on the Chinese and Taiwanese translations of “Jakbyeol haji anneunda” (We Do Not Part), a novel by Han Kang—the first Korean and Asian female writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. By analyzing these translations, the study identifies the publishers’ objectives and the strategies they used to adapt peritextual elements to the target culture. Although both versions share the same translator, they were published by different publishers, resulting in notable discrepancies in peritextual construction. These differences manifest in various aspects such as content and layout, interpretive framing, and the mediation of culture-specific items.
