AB - This study examines the formation and practice of the feminist translation through the case of Korean translator Hye-dam Yu. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, it explores how the translator’s social trajectory and internalized values have shaped her identity and orientation as a feminist translator. Focusing on her Korean translation of Sheila Jeffreys’s Beauty and Misogyny, the study analyzes the application of seven feminist translation strategies proposed by Lee Sang-bin (2023), including mirroring, tagging, unpacking, and footnoting. The analysis focuses on selected passages where discourses of femininity and misogyny are most salient, thereby illustrating how Yu’s feminist translation strategies are concretely enacted. By examining eight specific source and target text segments, this paper reveals how Yu’s translation choices embody a translator’s habitus that resists patriarchal doxa and engages in socially conscious rewriting. The findings highlight the significance of individual agency in feminist translation practices and contribute to expanding the sociological framework in translation studies.
