AB - This study examines the translation of architectural codes at the Seodaemun Prison History Hall, a colonial heritage site and memory museum. Drawing on translation studies and geosemiotics, it analyzes how architectural elements encoding disciplinary surveillance and spatial control are recontextualized across multilingual museum texts. The analysis shows that current translations frequently adopt functional and generalized terms. These choices normalize historically specific, coercive spatial relations into neutral technical descriptions, partially obscuring aspects of colonial violence and diminishing the visibility of the disciplinary logic embedded in the site’s architecture. The study argues that translation in memory museums is not a neutral act of linguistic transfer but a representational practice that shapes how colonial heritage is perceived. Translation thus mediates the relationship between spatial form and historical meaning, participating in the reconstruction of memory. The study suggests that translations at colonial heritage sites should preserve historical context while avoiding excessive functional reductionism, thereby encouraging more critical engagement with colonial memory and strengthening the role of Seodaemun Prison History Hall as a transnational site of memory.
