ABSTRACT

Journey to the West is a science fiction comedy film directed by Kong Dashan and produced by Guo Fan and Wang Hongwei. It was first screened at the Pingyao International Film Festival on October 17, 2021 and released in theaters on April 1, 2023. The film tells a story about exploring the universe in the form of a 'fake documentary', which incorporates many reflections on 'science'. In the past, people observed nature, studied nature, and conquered nature. The scientific revolution hundreds of years ago promoted the birth of modern science and quickly formed a knowledge framework that has become popular all over the world. When society is constantly imagining on the basis of science and rationality, Journey to the West puts the brakes on. Do we humans really have to pursue scientific development so blindly? Why are we pursuing development so much? Not only that, the film goes further and asks: What is the meaning of human existence? In the process of thinking about this ultimate question, the film raises fundamental questions about the 'science' that supports the development of modern society. This article analyzes the film's questioning and deconstructive thinking about modern science from the standpoint of reflecting on science.
