ABSTRACT

Background: Adolescent smoking is not only associated with health risks, but also with other addictions and deviant behaviors, such as alcohol and drug abuse. The average age of first smokers in Korea is 13.2 years old, which is very low, requiring special social attention to youth who smoke. Considering that the first social group that adolescents come into contact with is the family, it is important to examine the family experiences of smoking adolescents. Purpose: This study proposes an integrated perspective on smoking behavior and family experiences of smoking adolescents by in-depth exploration of the family experience, which is the primary support system of smoking adolescents. The purpose of this study is to present specific action strategies and alternatives to increase the effectiveness of smoking prevention and smoking cessation among adolescents and their families. Methodology: Five smoking adolescents were selected through intentional sampling and snowball sampling, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. A qualitative case study method, which is an appropriate method for showing and understanding the complex dynamics of the smoking adolescent family, was analyzed. Findings: Five themes appeared in the analysis results were ‘smoking-tolerant family environment’, ‘disruption of communication between family members’, ‘stressful family’, ‘weak ties between family members’, and ‘active efforts of parents’. This family experience of smoking adolescents was identified as a major factor leading to smoking behavior along with the initial awareness of smoking Conclusions: As policy and practical measures that can be suggested for young smokers and their families, customized interventions for young smokers' families, simultaneous parent and sibling interventions, and changes in the smoking culture tolerant are suggested
