A Liberal Arts Micro Degree and Efficacy of Dual Degree System

The changes in education according to the changed social changes were examined through the Liberal Arts Micro Degree and Bachelor of Liberal Arts system. There are many disagreements as to whether it is positive for education to respond sensitively to changes in the times, but the important point is that Liberal Arts education that meets the needs of society is necessary. It can be said that Liberal Arts Micro Degree and Bachelor of Liberal Arts system in Liberal Arts education are actively converging these. The above discussion is summarized as it is. First, changes in the educational environment and the necessity of redesigning Liberal Arts education were investigated. In modern society, knowledge and information required by society are rapidly changed regardless of time. Therefore, it is necessary to seek changes in the Liberal Arts education of the Universities in order to meet such demands. Now, it is necessary to move away from the perception that Liberal Arts are simply credits to be completed for graduation, and to seek a horizontal link between Liberal Arts subjects, and furthermore, it must change to the direction of educating the newly required professionalism. To achieve this, the need for a redesign of the Liberal Arts education is emerging because it is only possible to improve the existing Liberal Arts education system. Second, the operational status and educational performance of the Liberal Arts Micro Degree were reviewed. The Liberal Arts Micro Degree aims to acquire additional degrees in a short period of time by intensively completing designated Liberal Arts subjects, or to obtain Dual Degrees by linking mini-degrees by competency to Liberal Arts Degrees. To this end, a total of five competencies, namely, altruistic personality competency, narcissistic emotional competency, independent self-reliance capacity, creative problem-solving capacity, and integrative communication capacity were e stablished, and a M icro D egree course w as p rovided for each competency. International Society and Human Rights Expert Course for altruistic personality competency, Art Culture Planning Course, Creative Musical Production Practice Course, Festival Play Culture Planning Expert Course for narcissistic emotional competency, ICT Utilization Master Course, Korean Language Proficiency Crtification Course, Cultural Content Creator Specialist Course for independent competency, Software Coding Course, Convergence Cultural Knowledge Cultivation Course, Content Convergence Startup Course for solving competency the creative problem, and In the integrative communication competency, the Liberal Arts English Course, Humanities Counseling and Healer Course, and Communication Master Course were included. Third, the effectiveness of the Liberal Arts Micro Degree System and the Dual Degree System was examined. In order to meet the social needs, it is the Micro Degree and the Double-Degree Liberal Arts system that have expanded the Liberal Arts education to seek changes. Through this reform of the Liberal Arts curriculum, student-centered education can be made possible. This is because students can selectively study Liberal Arts subjects from a long-term perspective in order to obtain a degree on their own. It can also lay the foundation for convergence education. This is because the diversity of disciplines can be recognized by linking the Liberal Arts Micro Degree with major education. In the process of completing the Liberal Arts Micro Degree and Double Liberal Arts Degree, students can naturally develop convergence thinking skills. In addition, the professionalism required in a rapidly changing society can be solved through a Liberal Arts Degree. In general, the problem of rigidity to changes in majors can be actively resolved in Liberal Arts education.

A Case Study about the Operation of ‘Online Reading Debate Competition’ and Facilitating Factors about Student's Activity under Untact Environment

This research focused on what could be facilitating factors about students’ non-subject activities under untact environment, through the analysis of participation motives of debating teams and contemplation about the operation of in-school 'Online Reading Debate Competition'. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the reading debate competition in the Fall Semester of 2021 was operated by online from the plan, preparation, and to the execution step as same as other non-subject activities. Among the competition participants, first year student’s participation rate- who were taking compulsory liberal arts education-was high, and I also could find “Critical Thinking and Discussion” and “Integrated Thinking and Academic Writing” classes were closely related with each other, through the analysis of participation motives. Through the research, I could find following important implications: First, when the non-subject program is connected with the regular curriculum, students were i nstinctively i nterested i n that, because t he assigned book and debate model were closely related with compulsory liberal arts education. Second, a learner-centered education was important in terms of higher participation rate of students who had experienced the Flipped-Learning through the real time ZOOM than that of students who just had taken professor’s video lecture. Third, unlike existing enrolled students, the professor’s motivation role during the class had a high correlation w ith first year students, who a re t he C orona generation. When a ll the s tudies w ere combined, I c ould f ind that making a n online educational environment which enables active exchanges and communications among students and with the professor was an important facilitating factor about their non-subject activities, even under untact environment due to Covid-19 pandemic. I hope this research could be helpful to other university’s curriculum development of online non-subject program for the education of thinking and expression.

The Advent of the Metaversity and the Responsibility of Liberal Arts Education : Focused on Changes in the Educational Environment due to COVID-19 Persistence and the Rise of the Metaverse

The COVID-19 pandemic created a significant challenge for the strength of the education system, resulting in opportunities for new types of education. The experimental attempts in education that have been ongoing are now forming a n ew n ormal. N ormally, education w as c arried o ut according to a predetermined class schedule and sequential curriculum, which was the most common form at universities; but the non-face-to-face environment during the pandemic changed education into an unfamiliar scene instantly. In particular, edutechnology, which is linked to ICT and AI, swiftly developed a simultaneously omnipresent and ubiquitous educational environment, and now it has expanded to the metaverse based on virtual reality. In this regard, the sense of crisis in universities is clearly different from before. In light of such changing times, this article explores the changes in the educational environment due to COVID-19 persistence and the expansion of the metaverse and characterizes metaversity as the ideal forms of universities. Unlike a university, metaversity refers to an ideological form of a future university that overcomes the limitations of a traditional university, which consists of a one-dimensional educational community. The current situation surrounding higher education is based on the contemporaneity of the uncontemporary. Considering the current educational situation, this is due to the prominent phenomenon of the coexistence of heterogeneous factors from other eras. This article attempts introspective and normative approaches to future education rather than technical analysis. First, the meaning of the metaverse phenomenon will be analyzed, and the metaverse’s impact on higher education will be predicted. Furthermore, the most important influence of the metaverse is temporal and spatial changes. Therefore, educational content, educational methodology, and changes in educational space that are necessary for education in the future will be derived, and the responsibility of liberal education, which will be heavier at the educational level, will be reaffirmed. Lastly, the necessity of searching for new types of universities for future will be presented.

The Power of Stories Moving towards the Discovery of the People Spirit : The Novel Gwanchon Supil by Lee Mun-gu

Lee Mun-gu's Gwanchon Supil, which was published in 1977, is considered an important aesthetic achievement representing Korean novels. Lee Mun-gu lost his father and two older brothers to the Korean War. All of them suffered a tragic massacre for their left-wing activities. From the Korean War to 1980, an anti-human rights system called the guilt-by-association system was implemented in Korean society. The guilt-by-association system was a suppressive mechanism that made it impossible to lead a normal social life if someone in the family was involved in left-wing activities. In the 1970s, Lee Mun-gu entered the path of the anti-dictatorship democratization movement. Lee Mun-gu believed that he could avoid the risk of arrest and detention only if he talked about ‘the issue of his family’s involvement in left-wing activities’. Lee Mun-gu created Gwanchon Supil which considers the courage of 'self-disclosure' and the politics of confession. Gwanchon Supil consists of a total of 8 volumes. Since it has been published for over five years, each novel has a slightly different spatial and temporal background. By examining the composition of space and time f or t he e ight s eries of Gwanchon Supil, the t heme o f the work can be specified. 「Ilakseosan」, 「Hwamusipil」, and 「Haengunyusu」 are the recollections of the narrator who visited Gwanchon Village on January 3, 1972, and have secured narrative homogeneity. With the background of Gwanchon Village, they have a similar format of recalling the past and maintain consistency as a series of novels. 「Noksucheongsan」, 「 Gongsantowol」 and 「Gwansanchujeong」 take a way of reminiscing the past f rom the p resent and depict the wealthy people of Daeboki, Seokgong, Yumanman and Boksan through Gwanchon Village as a medium. The singularity of these series is that the story of the present and the story of the past overlap and form a free flow. 「Yeoyojuseo」 and 「Wolgokhuya」 unfold the current story in a space outside Gwanchon Village. 「Yeoyojuseo 」 critically portrayed the conflict between animal protection and respect for human rights through the character Shin Yong-mo, and 「Wolgokhuya」 embodied the rural reality related to the 4H Movement (Saemaul Movement) from a satirical point of view through Kim Hee-chan as a medium. Yi Mun-gu moved from 'self-disclosure' to 'reflexive perception of reality' and 'active critique of rural reality' during the five-year period of creating the Gwanchon Supil series. The figure of the grandfather appearing in Gwanchon Supil shows the impressive features of the lost Joseon Confucian scholars. The figure of his father, who was a socialist, is carefully hidden. However, in 「 Ilakseosan」, 「Noksucheongsan」, and 「Gongsantowol」, the father gradually takes shape. The speaker reconciles with his father, who has an egalitarian worldview, and affirms his father. Through the image of his grandfather, who had a Confucian worldview, and h is father, who pursued the ideal of egalitarianism, the narrator moves on the path of a ‘popular egalitarian’. In that sense, Gwanchon Supil can be seen as a narrative of the discovery of the people spirit and a story of becoming the people. Lee Mun-gu has strengthened active self-discovery and social critical awareness in the process of creating novel series of Gwanchon Supil for over 5 years. A t first, the work depicted a n arrative o f careful confession, then it was active self-expression as a victim. Later, he published works that actively defended the egalitarian worldview of the people spirit through becoming the people. Gwanchon Supil contains an e thic o f care a nd a n ethic o f life. T hrough t his work, implications can be found that can connect the possibility of constructing an ecological future society with the restoration of rural communities.
