AB - A Study on the Translational Problems in English Versions of Sijo Poems by Yi Sunshin, Yi Jonyeon, and Kim Jongseo Chang, Einsik (Joongbu University)This paper aims to examine some translational problems and errors in English versions of Sijo poems by Yi Sunshin, Yi Jonyeon, and Kim Jongseo. For this purpose, six different books including the poems of those poets are examined.There is generally a serious formal problem in English versions of classical Sijo poems the original three-chang(line) division is usually translated either into a five-line to a nine-line division, or into a three-stanza division, according to the translators. Although the classical Sijo is a fixed-form verse in Korea, the modern translators tend to translate it into a non-fixed form, making it difficult to distinguish it from free verse. The characteristic of the classical Sijo is that it consists of three lines: the first, middle, and last. Therefore, the three-line division must be kept in any translation, even if the translated verses may not convey the full meaning of the original texts.Translations should be performed in the most strict and accurate manner so as not to distort any of the complex factors of the source text. The first principle of translation is the correct and exact reproduction of the source text into a new target text. For the translators, translating Korean classical Sijo poems and finding adequate expressions with the original rhythm and sound are a tough and constant task.
