AB - This paper aims to explore the translation perspectives employed in the retranslation of classic literature. Literary classics are timeless and they are often retranslated for various reasons such as the change in target language and language rules, plagiarisms, repeated publications and the translator's unique perspective of the original text. Under the assumption that every translator reflects his/her unique perspective in his/her work, two Korean translations of Stendhal's Le Rouge et Le Noir were analyzed to identify the different translation perspectives.
Because literary works are translated under the collaboration of the publisher and the translator, interviews were conducted to identify the translator's perspective and the environment in which the translation was done. A review of literary documents was also conducted to identify the stylistic devices of the original work.
As a result, free indirect discourse, internal monologue and direct intervention of the author turned out to be important stylistic devices of the original work, and the translations.
