ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to observe the problems shown in the Spanish translations of dialogues in novels, especially caused from the difficulty of translating Korean sentence-enders, one of the peculiar linguistic components of the Korean language. In the novels the dialogues generally serve to give rhythm to the text, to help readers to catch the main plot of the story and to better understand the characters in the story. And in the Korean language the sentence-enders work as the key elements to transfer the meaning of the dialogues. So if a translator doesn’t consider the meaning system of Korean sentence-enders used to express the speaker’s intention, the readers of the translated texts can misunderstand the plot. And moreover, they can't understand what’s the real identity of the characters nor what’s the author’s narrative strategy. In order to solve these problems it is required that the translators pay attention to the meaning system of the Korean sentence-enders in the dialogues and actively intervene to make clear the meaning of the text.
