AB - In Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies, Nkwenti-Azeh (1998: 249) wrote, "In specialized translation, it is well known that the search for interlingual equivalents is a time-consuming activity, occupying in some cases up to 60 per cent of total translator time." Terminology dictionaries including web-based databases can be a great asset for translators as they are a significant help in tackling such a daunting task. Hence it is important to know where and how to use the dictionaries which can be an effective translation aid, thereby reducing translation time and boosting translators' terminological competence.
Translating materials dealing with cultural heritage is no exception. As such, this paper introduces bilingual terminology dictionaries available for translation in the field of cultural heritage, and examines their effectiveness as translation aids.
It is encouraging that, as shown in this study, an increasing number of such dictionaries have been made available in the field since the 2000s. However, this paper also finds there is still much room for improvement in various respects: some of the dictionaries provide correspondences that have not taken into account the relation between cultural identity and translation and even reflect colonial views.
In terms of user-friendliness, the web-based dictionaries are seldom "easy and pleasant to use" due to terminological standardization and poor search functions, and do not fully take advantage of their electronic nature (Kernerman 2001: 147). Hence, this paper makes suggestions that could be considered when publishing translation-oriented dictionaries in the future.
