AB - The musical industry in Korea has grown 27 times since 2000. At the center of the growth lies active licensed musical productions. Rent has been a very successful musical in Korea: In 2020, it celebrated its 20th anniversary and the 8th production since its first performance in Korea in 2000. This study aims to investigate how translator visibility and the translation of lyrics of Rent changed over time. The lyrics of ‘Out Tonight’ and ‘Seasons of Love’ from the first production in 2000 and the most recent production in 2020 were collected and analyzed. The findings are that translator visibility in the program books and news media increased over time, the number of syllables of the lyrics decreased and that phrasing was improved. However, the manner of rhyme representation changed, indicating that more recent production put a higher priority on delivering the message and placing the right keyword in the right place. In addition, the more recent production left more source-text words untranslated than the first production.
