ABSTRACT

Specialized military interpreters have not been readily fostered despite their recruitment since 2002, 2001 and 1997, respectively by the Republic of Korea Army, Navy, and Air Force to support the stationing of U.S. Forces Korea. This paper provides implications for the recruitment and employment of professional military interpreters through comparing cases in the United States and Germany Armed Forces. The United States utilizes Military Occupational Specialty 09L, along with contracting private and corporate interpreters. German military interpreters are soldiers with required language competencies and private contractors recruited through open advertisements. Two implications were derived. Firstly, comparing the military operational theater and number of military personnel dispatched overseas, Korea‘s demand remained at a relatively small number. With the expansion in defensive cooperation and support for international military operations, flexible employment of military interpreters is required. Secondly, in preparation of the anticipated decline of population that will lead to a possible lack of military personnel, conducting additional studies on military interpretation outsourcing is in need.
