ABSTRACT

This paper examines the factors influencing the selection of South Korean musicals in the Chinese market from 2001 to 2024. Utilizing a theoretical framework grounded in Toury’s translation policy and relevant theories of translation selection, the study analyzes the extratextual factors that have shaped the Chinese market’s preference for South Korean musicals. This analysis identifies several key factors, including the productive reception facilitated by a cultural vacuum, the prominence of Chinese discourses emphasizing “Chinese learning as substance and Western learning for application,” the rising prestige of Korean culture under the influence of the Hallyu (Korean Wave), and strategic patronage by the South Korean government and major corporations such as CJ ENM. Additional factors include the alignment of South Korean musicals with Chinese ideological preferences, their high commercial quality, and the appeal of small-scale productions, which reduce financial risks and increase investment returns. The findings underscore the importance of a comprehensive approach informed by translation studies to enhance the cultural capital of South Korean musicals. Such an approach can further establish South Korea as the “Asian Broadway” to solidify its position in the global musical theater market.
