AB - Ideology serves as a conceptual and philosophical framework that shapes sociocultural norms and values. In translation, the ideology embedded in the source text (ST) may change as it interacts with the target culture. Antoine Berman argues that a foreignizing strategy for maintaining lettres should be adopted to preserve the vitality and foreign identity of the ST. Translating lettres involves pursuing a form of literalism aimed at resisting the homogenizing tendencies of domestication, ensuring that the source language remains alive in the target text. This approach can serve as a key mechanism for actively engaging with and embracing foreignness. The present study closely examines the Korean translation of 政治逻辑—当代中国社会主义政治学 (The Logic of Chinese Modernization), viewing ideology as a critical framework for analyzing the patterns of “living” lettres. The findings reveal the degree to which lettres in the ST are preserved in the Korean translation. By embracing the foreignness inherent in the ST, “lettre translation” allows the ST ideology to be fully realized, offering an opportunity to reevaluate the ethical dimensions of translation.
