AB - Traditional typologies of interpreting have been constructed around the human interpreter as the central agent, offering a theoretical framework suited to the pre-AI era of interpreting practice. However, the rapid advancement of AI and speech translation technologies is introducing new modalities and agents into the interpreting ecosystem, necessitating a fundamental reassessment of existing typologies. This study explores how AI-based interpreting services can be situated within or beyond the traditional interpreting landscape and proposes a new typology for the age of AI. By reviewing literature on interpreting typologies and analyzing emerging use cases of AI-based and automated interpreting services, the study argues that the interpreting market is undergoing multidimensional diversification. In response, it proposes a five-part typology of interpreting, mapped along a spectrum of human–technology integration. Unlike previous typologies, this new framework is defined by the degree and nature of human–machine involvement. The study also highlights challenges inherent in technology-integrated interpreting and calls for evidence-based research to address them.
