AB - This study conducts a comparative analysis of sermon and discussion speech by the same speaker to identify linguistic factors influencing the difficulty of sermon interpreting. Key variables include speech rate, sentence length, lexical diversity, the frequency of church-specific terminology, and the use of figurative language. The results indicate that while sermons tend to be slower and syntactically simpler, they contain a higher frequency of repeated theological terms, metaphors, and religious concepts−a set of features that add to the complexity of sermon interpreting. Sermon discourse, in particular, is situated within the context of a faith community and is characterized by emotional engagement and persuasive intent. In light of these findings, we argue that training for sermon interpreters must go beyond linguistic competence to include theological literacy, discourse interpretation strategies, and techniques for emotional delivery. This study offers foundational insights for developing interpreter training models applicable to religious settings, including but not limited to non-English-speaking contexts.
