ABSTRACT

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is reshaping the translation and interpretation industry, compelling professionals to reassess the value and future of their work. This study investigates the systemic challenges facing the industry through the lens of Luhmann’s systems theory. It addresses three central questions: (1) How does the lack of a structured system affect translation and interpretation professionals? (2) What measures are necessary to establish such a system? (3) Who should take the lead in implementing these changes? To explore these questions, the study examines the concepts of boundary work and the professionalization of translation and interpretation. It also considers the legitimacy of a professional association, identifying the Korean Association of Translators and Interpreters (KATI) as a pivotal actor in shaping the profession’s future. Accordingly, a critical review of KATI’s activities over the past six years was conducted based on the boundary work and professionalization. This review highlights four urgent priorities: (1) implementing a rigorous yet practical certification system, (2) enhancing KATI’s external engagement through research and policy advocacy, (3) fostering stronger collaboration with graduate programs in translation and interpretation, and (4) reinforcing ethical standards and professional norms. With these suggestions, this study provides a foundation for future dialogue on the role of KATI and the long-term sustainability of the field.
