ABSTRACT

This study investigates the potential for collaboration between human translators and ChatGPT through a case analysis of the English translation of Bukchon Dasil, a non-fiction essay originally written in Korean. A draft translation was generated with ChatGPT-4o, after which a human translator completed the final version, drawing on the AI tool at certain stages of revision and polishing. The final translations fell into three categories: (1) cases where ChatGPT’s draft was adopted without modification, (2) cases where the draft served as a basis for revision and refinement, and (3) cases requiring the human translator’s creative intervention to reconstruct meaning and convey cultural or emotional resonance. These findings indicate that while ChatGPT can provide a solid foundation for translation, the interpretive and creative input of human translators remains indispensable. When the precision of AI is complemented by the interpretive sensitivity of human translators, translation emerges as a collaborative endeavor rather than a displacement of human agency.
