AB - Although research on game translation has grown increasingly active in recent years, relatively few studies have systematically examined how its quality should be evaluated. This paper investigates the distinctive characteristics of game texts and proposes approaches to assessing the quality of their translations. To account for the diversity of game texts, it reviews prior studies on their communicative functions and multimodal features. With respect to evaluation practices, the study analyzes current industry-oriented metrics and Localization Quality Assessment (LQA) frameworks used in professional localization contexts. The findings indicate that contemporary approaches to game translation evaluation tend to favor domestication strategies. Finally, the paper identifies limitations in existing evaluation methods and offers recommendations for developing more comprehensive and context-sensitive frameworks for assessing game translation quality. The limitations of current evaluation methods can be summarized as the difficulty of applying existing methods to multifunctional texts and to games in which translation expectations and needs vary depending on the players. Therefore, this paper proposes a more differentiated set of evaluation criteria that takes into account the characteristics of specific game types and player communities.
