AB - This study analyzes the Chinese translation patterns of the discourse marker mwo(뭐) in Korean novels, focusing on the loss and distortion of the speaker’s attitude and contextual meaning in the translation process. The discourse functions of mwo were categorized into emphasis and mitigation, and further subdivided into more specific functional types. Translation patterns were analyzed in terms of omission, paraphrase, correspondence, and mistranslation, with particular attention to whether functional equivalence was maintained. Drawing on 81 instances, the analysis shows that omission was the most common pattern, followed by paraphrase, correspondence, and mistranslation. In omission cases, the absence of equivalent elements made the loss of discourse-level nuances inevitable. Paraphrased translations often conveyed the basic propositional meaning but failed to reflect the speaker’s attitude. Correspondence occurred relatively infrequently and did not necessarily result in functional equivalence, which suggests that formal correspondence alone cannot fully reproduce the discourse functions of mwo. Using actual published translations, this study presents function-based translation tendencies of mwo and provides empirical insights into discourse marker translation in Korean-Chinese literary translation.
