ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of sense of community in the association between satisfaction with youth activities and happiness, and the role of self-esteem in moderating those relationship among middle and high school students. Methodology: Regression and moderated mediation analyses were applied to the data from a representative sample comprising middle school students (N=2,642; 47.4% girls) and high school students (N=3571; 47.9% girls) based on a nationwide study of the ‘Research on participation in youth activities V’ in Korea. Findings: The results revealed that sense of community partially mediated the relationship between satisfaction with youth activities and happiness, after controlling for gender, school level, geographic area, and socioeconomic status. Furthermore, results showed significant moderation effects of self-esteem, showing the mediation effects of sense of community was stronger when adolescents reported lower levels of self-esteem. Conclusions: The findings suggest that greater attention to satisfaction with youth activities in explaining adolescents’ happiness, and highlight the importance of sense of community in enhancing happiness. The results also suggest to consider personal characteristics such as self-esteem utilizing differential effects for effective intervention strategies.
