The effect of job stress in jobholders on xerostomia

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the effect between job stress in jobholders and xerostomia. Methods : 250 jobholders living in Jecheon city were the subjects of this questionnaire. The questionnaire was made up of three contents and 37 items: general characteristic(13), job stress(14), degree & behavior of xerostomia(10). The data were analyzed by two-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA to examine the subjects general characteristics,job stress and degree of xerostomia and were analyzed by Chi-square test to examine the subjects general characteristics, job stress and behavior of xerostomia. Results : Only 215 jobholders were evaluated due to inadequate responses. The results were as follow. 1. As general characteristic of jobholder, male(83.7%) were more than women(16.3%), 30~39 year-old(47%) in age variable, university graduation(63.7%) in the last educational background variable, 2~3 million won(31.2%) in the month average income variable, 1~5 year(33.5%) in tour of duty variable, non-smoker(47.9%) in smoking variable were most. Married(58.6%) were more than unmarried(39.5%). Alcoholic(69.8%) were more than nonalcoholic(30.2%). 2. As classification of job stress, high strain group was 28.4%, active group was 26%, low strain group was 24.2%,passive group was 21.4%. 3. Analysis of effect between general characteristic and degree & behavior of xerostomia showed smoker were statistical significantly higher than non-smoker on‘ dry eat’,‘ Am-sal’,‘ Night awake’,‘ Slip-liq’and‘ Gumcandy’(p<0.05) and showed alcoholic were statistical significantly higher than non-alcoholic on ‘Dry PM’,‘Night awake’,‘ H2O-bed’(p<0.05). 4. Analysis of effect between job stress and degree & behavior of xerostomia showed hight strain group were statistical significantly higher than low strain group on ‘Dry PM’, ‘Dry-day’, ‘Am-sal’, ‘Eff-life’and ‘Night awake’(p<0.05). Conclusions : As high strain group were higher than other groups on degree & behavior of xerostomia, stress would be factor that have an effect on xerostomia. Thus consider and management of stress is necessary for diagnosis and treatment of xerostomia.

Effect of cooperative learning on learning strategies, academic self-efficacy and class satisfaction among dental hygiene students

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the educational effect of cooperative learning, which enables learners to make portfolio by taking advantage of their knowledge and skills acquired through practice,on an oral prophylaxis practice course in an attempt to stir up the spontaneous learning of learners, their learning interest and problem-solving skills. Methods : The selected dental hygiene students engaged in cooperative learning in oral prophylaxis practice III class in the second semester of their sophomore year by utilizing portfolio that was prepared by altering an inclusive dental hygiene practice model. They completed all the 15-week practice course, and then their portfolio was evaluated. They were divided into eight nonequivalent groups whose members were all different in academic standing, and their learning strategies and academic self-efficacy were checked before and after the instruction was provided. And their satisfaction with the class was investigated after the instruction was provided. Results : 1. There were significant gaps to 0.36±0.07 in the charge of learning strategies after they engaged in cooperative learning(p<0.01). There were the broadest differences in cognitive strategies to 3.61, followed by metacognitive strategies to 3.19, and significant differences were found in all the subfactors(p<0.01). 2. There were significant gaps in the charge of self-efficancy to 0.13±0.06 after they engaged in cooperative learning(p<0.01). There were the widest differences in self-regulating efficancy to 3.49, followed by confidence to 3.03 and task difficulty preference to 2.97, and significant differences were found in all the subfactors(p<0.01). 3. When their satisfaction level was analyzed after engaging in cooperative learning, there were significant gaps to 3.94 in the satisfaction level with all of the lectures(p<0.01). There were significant gaps in the satisfaction level with lecture to 4.20, with ensuring academic achievement to 4.13 and with cooperative learning to 3.48 (p<0.01). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings indicated that cooperative learning had a positive impact on the learning strategies, academic self-efficacy and class satisfaction of the learners, and this study is expected to lay the foundation for the development of new teaching methods for dental hygiene.

Recognition of college-preparatory students for dental hygienist

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to survey the recognition of college-preparatory students who interested and prevented themselves in oral health diseases for dental hygienist in Yeungnam South Korea. Methods : The subjects in this study were 328 students who was seriously worried for career and entrance into a school. The survey period was from August 16th 2011 to November 26th 2011, and the data was collected from the high school students in Yeungnam and the preparatory students who visited S college in Gyeongju. This study was conducted by using the self-reported questionnaire. Results : The result of this study are as follows. 87.2% of the subjects have recognized about the name of dental hygienist, 51.5% have distinguished dental hygienist in the clinic, and 67.4% have recognized about education of dental hygienist that was more than a college graduate. The received services from dental hygienist was scalling(15.6%), assistant of treatment(14.7%), tooth brushing instrument(11.5%), Reception & receipt(11.0%), and etc. The majority of the subjects have recognized that dental hygienist was the professional(4.82 points), the important role in oral health(4.88 points), and the intermediary between patients and dentists(4.60 points). And they were friendly(4.64 points), responsible(4.81 points), and worthwile job(5.01 points). However their appellation has not been established yet(4.00 points), they was difficult to distinguish from nursing assistants(4.37 points), and their task did not differs from AN(4.53 points). Also they compared to other job was not stressful job(3.58 points). Conclusions : Refer to these results, those will be the basis for professional development and status establish of clinical dental hygienists and for the upright role as a professional medical personnel of dental hygiene students. In addition, those will help to patients in the future, and become an effective instrument to learn knowledge,skill, and service that needed to conduct business.

Smoking condition of students in dental hygiene and relations with self-esteem in a local district

Objectives : This study was performed to understand smoking condition and to investigate the relations among knowledge regarding smoking and oral hygiene, awareness of anti-smoking policy, and self-esteem, to provide fundamental basis, developing programs for smoking prevention and anti-smoking. Methods : From September 7, 2010 to September 16, 2010, questionaire survey was conducted for 566 female university students studying dental hygienics at a local district in Jeollanam-do. Collected data was analyzed by Chi-square test, t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffe multiple range test, Perason’s correlation test, and stepwise multiple regression test. Results : 1. Smoking condition of study subjects on general characteristics showed 17.1%, where 14.0% of previous smoking history, and 68.9% of currently nonsmoker. 2. Analysis on the knowledge related to smoking and oral hygiene, awareness of anti-smoking policy, and self esteem on the general characteristics of study subjects have shown better awareness of anti-smoking policy in non-alcoholics. Significant difference was found in knowledge about smoking and awareness of anti-smoking policy according to current resident status, but no difference found in self-esteem. Higher academic grade was related to higher awareness of anti-smoking policy and better ics. aalcell. Better health, but no diffeoral hygiene were related to better awareness of anti-smoking policy, and bewhich were statistically significant. Favorable interpersonal self-estehip was related to better awareness of anti-smoking policy. 3. Analysis on knowledge regarding smoking related health and oral hygiene, awareness of anti-smoking policy, and self-esteem showed higher level of anti-smoking knowledge in non-smoking group(60.44) compared to currently smoking group or group with previous history of smoking, and better awareness of anti-smoking policy in non-smoking group(53.54) than other groups, which was statistically significant. 4. Correlation analysis among smoking related knowledge, awareness of anti-smoking policy, and self-esteem has found relatively high correlation between smoking related knowledge and awareness of anti-smoking policy,which was statistically significant(r=0.481, p<0.001). 5. Among factors influencing awareness of anti-smoking policy, higher level of smoking related knowledge and satisfaction to specialty was related to higher awareness of anti-smoking policy which was lower in current smoker than past smoker, and higher academic grade was related to higher awareness of anti-smoking policy. Conclusions : Following results emphasize the need to establish a novel curriculum by which effective programs for smoking prevention and education of anti-smoking specialist could be provided as well as promoting coaching anti-smoking activity.

The dental status of foreign workers in the pocheon city and the analysis of their oral health behavior

Objectives : The purpose of this study on the oral health behavior of foreign workers and dental care in the community is to identify actual oral health conditions of immigrated labors, to promote their oral health and to gather basic data providing them with proper oral health services Methods : Based on previous studies, The researchers wrote their own surveys in English, in Vietnamnese, in Tagalogue, in Thai. Making questions on the paper to 114 foreign workers in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do were surveyed. Using the program SPSS 17.0 for Windows, the collected data were analyzed. The frequency analysis, the chi-square analysis and the correlation analysis was performed to recognize their relevance between the oral health status and the actual oral care and the subjective perception of oral health. Results : General characteristics of the foreign workers is the overwhelming majority of male demographic 78.9%. By age, 20-29 years of age accounted for 50%, and duration of stay in the city is less than 3-5 years to 68.4%, It was most common. The percentage going to the dentist when teeth hurt is although 56 percent. But the ratio to endure the pain without going to the dentist, was 44%. The main reason to not go to the dentist was the time 55.2% and cost 11.9%. A mere 9.6% of respondents knew about the free dental care and used. 67.5% of them was not aware of the free dental care agency, 59.6% were keen to use the free care. However, 40.4% did not want a free dental care because they did not have the time(26.3%), the distance is far away(3.5%), and difficulties in communication(3.5%) and the other(66.7%). Conclusions : The major percentage of the other reason(66.7%) why they did not want to go to free dental service,must be specifically identified. For the activation of free dental services, the active support of central and local governments is needed. By focusing on health-related departments of the University in the community, it is necessary to operate the program of the oral health care for foreign workers.

Effects of Mother’s Oral Health Care Behaviors on Dental Caries in Primary School Children

Objectives : By analyzing the affects of the mother’s oral care to the caries experiences of the elementary school children, To looking for the way to prevent dental caries in the primary school, to provide baseline data to perform the associated oral health education. Methods : Between the 3,676 children’s dental check-up data and the 2,934 survey of parents from 9 elementary schools in the the Gyeonggi Province, the exactly matching data of 2,358 pairs, children versus mothers, were analyzed during the period, 2009 May 4 to July 20, By using the PASW 18(SPSS-PC 18), Frequency analysis of the collected data, and cross-analysis, ANOVA, Bonferroni post-analysis was performed. Results : The findings of the study were as follows. 1. In children, the ratio(DMF rate)of the dental caries experience in permanent teeth, appeared higher for men than women. Divided by grade level, the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) generally appear higher in older than young. Thus between the child’s gender and grade level by the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) showed the statistically significant differences (p<0.05). 2. Between the socioeconomic characteristics of mothers and the children’s level of dental caries experiences, not showed the statistically significant difference.(p>0.05). 3. The significant difference showed between the dental caries levels of the children and the mother’s oral health care behavior - a toothbrush replacement period, mother’s broken teeth, mothers guidances of the brushing after snacks for children(p<0.05). Conclusions : The mother’s oral health attitudes and behaviors can affect to their children’s oral care habits. Therefore The mother themselves should have the right proper habit of oral health care, so that in oral health care mothers should be the model for their children. Institutionally more systematic and detailed oral health educational program in conjunction with the family is needed.

The effects of dental-hygiene students’goal achievement orientation on their self-efficacy and major adaptation and satisfaction

Objectives : The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of the goal achievement orientation of the students in dental-hygiene practice classes on their self-efficacy and on their adaptation to and satisfaction with their major. Methods : A survey was conducted among the dental-hygiene students in schools located in the Daegu region on October 24-31, 2011. A total of 212 accomplished questionnaires were gathered as sources of final analytical data. Statistical analysis was conducted on the collected data, using the SPSS 19.0 program. Results :1. The students who had good personal relationships(p=.000) and who chose their major and school based on their aptitude(p=.029) were found to have a higher degree of satisfaction than those who did not have good personal relationships and who did not choose their major and school based on their aptitude. 2. Self-confidence(p=.004), self-control efficacy(p=.000), mastery approach(p=.000), and performance approach(p=.003) were found to have positive correlations with major adaptation while task difficulty preference(p=.000) was found to have a negative correlation with the same. 3. Self-confidence(p=.004), self-control efficacy(p=.000), mastery approach(p=.000), and performance approach(p=.045) were also found to have a positive correlation with major satisfaction while task difficulty preference(p=.000) was found to have a negative correlation with the same. 4. Mastery approach(p=.000) in goal achievement orientation was found to have a positive effect on self-efficacy while mastery avoidance(p=.001) was found to have a negative effect on the same. Mastery avoidance showed the greatest effect on self-confidence(p=.000) while mastery approach showed the greatest effect on self-control efficacy(p=.000) and task difficulty preference(p=.000). 5. In goal achievement orientation, mastery approach(p=.000) was found to have a positive effect on major adaptation while mastery avoidance was found to have a negative effect on the same. Meanwhile, with regard to selfefficacy,self-control efficacy(p=.037) and task difficulty preference(p=.008) were found to have positive effects on major adaptation. 6. In the case of major satisfaction, mastery approach(p=.000) in goal achievement orientation was found to have a positive effect on it, and in self-efficacy, self-control efficacy(p=.038) and task difficulty preference(p=.002)were found to have positive effects on it. Conclusions : Accordingly, to raise the level of the dental-hygiene students’adaptation to and satisfaction with their major, the students should be given appropriate tasks so that they can raise their mastery goal, and they should be encouraged to raise their approach goal rather than their avoidance goal. In addition, the students should be provided assistance in setting self-expectations and in developing confidence in their capabilities.

Health promotion lifestyle to the selection factors of dental institutions among some office workers

The purpose of this study was to examine the influential factors for the choice of dental institutions among adult office workers who were one of major medical consumer groups, the relationship between their health promotion lifestyle and their choice of dental institutions, ways of boosting the efficiency of hospital management and differences in differentiation strategies among dental institutions. Methods : The subjects in this study were 160 office workers who were aged 20 and over and worked in Seoul,North Jeolla Province and South Jeolla Province. They were selected by convenience sampling, and a survey was conducted from February 1 to July 20, 2011. The answer sheets from 149 respondents were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS WIN 12.0 except for 11 incomplete ones. Results : As for the selection factors of dental institutions by general characteristics, they attached a statistically and significantly different importance to convenience according to gender(p<0.05), to reliability, facilities and cleanness according to age(p<0.05), to reliability and convenience according to academic credential(p<0.05) and to facilities and cleanness according to academic credential(p<0.01). Concerning the links between the form of using dental institutions and the selection factors of dental institutions, they gave a statistically and significantly different weight to reliability according to that(p<0.05). Convenience(p<0.001) was the primary selection factor of dental institutions among those who scored higher in health promotion lifestyle. Conclusions : Given the above-mentioned findings, it seemed that the regular implementation of oral health plans geared toward workers and the development of educational programs are required to promote the oral health of workers. But this study examined the workers in several regions only, and the findings might not be generalizable.

A study on oral health status and oral health behavior practice perceived by workers in part areas

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine about workers’oral health status and oral health behavior practice. Methods : Questionnaire survey was carried out targeting 331 workers within the industrial complex of Jeonju city in 2011. As a result of surveying and analyzing workers’oral health status, habit related to oral health,activity restriction, which is oral disease phase, and oral health practice level by using SPSSWIN 12.0Results : 1. Workers’experience of visiting dental hospital(clinic) for the past one year was indicated to be the highest with 64.9% in the working period with 10 years-under 20 years(p<0.001). Experience of scaling was indicated to be averagely 38.8%. 2. The oral health status perceived by workers was the highest with 40.5% in ‘having something abnormal.’A problem was the highest with 28.0% in‘ dental caries.’A cause was indicated to be 42.6% in‘ because of being naturally weak in tooth or the gum.’The biggest reason for having failed to receive the dental treatment at a proper time was indicated to be the highest with 24.8% in‘ because of feeling burdensome about dental expense.’3. 58.4% of male workers were smoking. The use of dental hygiene device was the highest with 40.6% in mouth-rinse. 4. Absence caused by oral disease was indicated to be the highest with 13.8%in the household income in more than 3,500,000won, thereby having shown the significant difference(p<0.05). Early leaving was indicated to be the highest 13.9% in more than 50s age, thereby having shown the significant difference(p<0.05). Also, as for factors of absence and early leaving, a pain was the highest with 64.7%. 5. Workers’oral health practice level was the highest with 2.85 points in‘ Brushing teeth before going to bed.’Conclusions : Synthesizing these findings, the oral management could be known to be made negligently in the workers with the older age, the lower academic background, and the lower income. The institutional foundation is considered to be necessary for which the oral health education can be efficiently performed in addition to a need of periodic oral examination for these classes.

Satisfaction on the practical training of public institution’s staffs in cyber oral health service

Objectives : This thesis aims to provide basic materials for exploring trends and operational strategy of the cyber training. To achieve study purpose, it analyzed the satisfaction of trainees in regard to the education of field training course of Cyber Oral Health Promotion Program, established and operated between 2007 and 2009. Methods : This study conducted questionnaire surveys after the completion of training to utilize the satisfaction level of 989 respondents among 1,310 employees of public institutions who completed the field training course of Cyber Oral Health Promotion Program. Results : Respondents showed satisfaction on the training course throughout three years in terms of satisfaction of instructional methods (screen characteristics, educational techniques, and so on) according to educational contents,the connection and realization of online education and service satisfaction, necessary for learning in association with educational guidance, offered to learners by a tutor and rapidity in questions and answers. A majority of respondents in all years answered that they participated in training program voluntarily for self-development and improvement in work ability, and they thought that the completion of course would be helpful to their current work and future work. In addition, cyber training program was primarily conducted in the working place by 72.5%, and the most difficult thing in cyber training was to combine work and learning by 60.6%. Conclusions : As shown in the results above, workers in public institutions were satisfied with cyber job training and it was evaluated that cyber job training would be helpful to performing their actual work. Therefore, it is needed to collect and evaluate more diverse requirements of trainees with regard to cyber job training, and the development and operation of job training program that reflects these results sufficiently is required.
