A survey on the current status and the opinion of professional oral health care for oral cancer patients

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the status and opinions of professional oral health care performance in oral cancer patients. Methods: Seven National University Dental Hospitals and the National Cancer Center in Korea surveyed the medical personnel in charge of oral health care for oral cancer patients. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions, including the status of expert oral health care education and performance for oral cancer patients, etc. A total of 47 questionnaires were retrieved, and the collected data were used in PASW Statistics 23.0 to perform frequency analysis, cross-analysis, and kruskal Wallis tests. Results: A survey of oral health care education found that 29.8% of the medical personnel had received education. The most performed of professional oral health care was found that applying fluoride by dental hygienist, treating stomatitis by dentist, and wiping mouths with sponge by nurse. The assessment of self-performance has shown that applying fluoride by dental hygienists has a statistically significant difference. Only 37.8% of oral health care education for patients was conducted. Most recognized that oral health care in oral cancer patients was important, but it is difficult to provide care due to lack of performance personnel and time, opportunities for performance personnel to be educated. The improvement was found to require an increase in the number of performance personnel, placement of professionals, and practical training to enhance performance capabilities. Conclusions: For oral health care of oral cancer patients, continuous education for medical personnel, establishment of oral health care manual and medical system, research on oral health care of oral cancer patients and public relations campaign will have to be activated. Development of expert care manual analysis and evaluation tools for oral health care in oral cancer patients in the future and development of standardized curriculum will be necessary.

Study on critical thinking, clinical practice satisfaction, and clinical performance of dental hygiene students

Objectives: This study was conducted to test the critical thinking tendency, clinical practice satisfaction, and clinical performance, and analyze the factors impacting clinical practice satisfaction and clinical performance of dental hygiene students. Methods: The study conducted a written survey during the period between 30 July ~20 August 2019, among 3rd and 4th year dental hygiene students from Seoul, Gyung-gi region, who had taken clinical practice courses. Using SPSS 22.0 program (IBM SPSS statistics, New York, USA), the study analyzed the final 174 cases. Results: Dental hygiene students scored 3.33±0.43, 3.48±0.83, and 3.30±0.58 for critical thinking, clinical practice satisfaction, and clinical performance, respectively. The clinical thinking score was higher when their study performance was good (p<0.001), clinical practice satisfaction was higher when their major satisfaction was satisfactory (p<0.001), higher when their relationship with their clinical practice partner was good, and the clinical performance was better when the students’ major satisfaction was good (p<0.001). The study performance yielded better results when their study achievement was better (p<0.05). Clinical practice satisfaction (r=0.156) and clinical performance (r=0.393) showed a positive correlation with critical thinking, and clinical performance had a positive correlation with clinical practice satisfaction. The impact factor for clinical practice satisfaction appeared to be clinical performance (p<0.05) and major satisfaction (p<0.001), and the factors impacting the clinical performance were among the sub-causes of critical thinking (p<0.05), intellectual fairness (p<0.05), watchfulness (p<0.05), clinical practice satisfaction (p<0.05), and major satisfaction (p<0.01). Conclusions: Results of the study showed that for dental hygiene students, critical thinking, clinical practice satisfaction, clinical performance, and major satisfaction were the impact factors affecting the students’ clinical performance. Therefore, the study recommends that development of educational programs and operation of a field-based curriculum is necessary to improve critical thinking, clinical practice satisfaction, and major satisfaction.

Proposal for dementia-related curriculum development for dental hygiene degree programs in Korea

Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the current state of dementia-related education for dental hygiene degree programs in Korea, as well as to develop a dementia-related curriculum for dental hygiene programs suitable for the social characteristics of Korea. Methods: The study was conducted between April and November 2018. First, the current state of dementia-related education for dental hygiene programs in colleges throughout Korea and dementia-related education for other health care-related fields were investigated. Based on the initial findings, the basic content of the preliminary curriculum was constructed. Second, based on the opinion of the dementia-related curriculum development committee comprising 10 professors of dental hygiene, the operations of dementia-related courses and relevant details were constructed. Third, these operations and relevant details were assessed and revised based on focus-group interviews. Fourth, the dementia-related curriculum was developed based on the study findings and literature review. Results: The name of the course in the developed curriculum was set as “Elderly Dental Hygiene and Practicum.” The course was established as a “major elective,” and was offered as two units with two instructional sessions of two hours each. The learning goal for this course was acquiring the methods for understanding and managing the characteristics of the elderly. A consensus was reached regarding conducting the theoretical and practical lessons on some of the dementia-related content. The dementia-related curriculum comprised 10 “required contents” which is to be conducted over three weeks of theoretical lessons and two weeks of practical lessons. Conclusions: With the growing elderly population, the development and operation of the curriculum for geriatric oral health interventions are warranted in dental hygiene education. However, continued discussions and improvements are needed on the extent of educational content, considering various dementia-related symptoms and general geriatric systemic diseases.
